A band completely new to me, but now, once heard, never forgotten I reckon! Who and what are WOSKI? Well, they are an alternate, 5 piece rock band, who hail from Manchester. As they say, they also have that ‘psychedelic edge’, I’d say they have an original sound combining rock, folk, psychedelic, and alternative music, fused into a totally original sound. Each member of the band have played in many bands and brought all their previous musical adventures to the party, a musical one of course. Having listened to this, there first EP, quite a few times now, I recognise what a good record this is. In places it is spacious, others powerful and full sounding, all the while the musical ideas and musicianship shine pretty brightly, making an impression on me. The song lyrics too, are pretty cool, thoughtful, forward looking, hopeful, all in all, a feel good factor accompanied by excellent music. The subjects of each lyric, are so well written, that we hear and absorb their meaning in such a natural way – which many a songwriter/band would love to have this facility in their songs. The EP has a very 21st century hippy like feel about it overhaul, which, to me, especially at the moment, and in these times, seems very appropriate. WOSKI see, feel the world, like all of us, but, they do something about it, using music as their weapon of choice, making us listen, share their thoughts and passions. You certainly feel a lot better about yourself and the world, after listening to this. So, when amongst friends, or on the internet, just ask yourselves ‘Where Are You Now?’
The band are: Hari – vocals, acoustic guitar; Helena – backing vocals, percussion; Marty – lead electric guitar+acoustic guitars; Max – bass; Wiz – percussion, effects.
“Grow On Trees”
From the very first sound you hear, introductory vocals of Hari, we know that we’re in for a bit of musical treat and journey into unknown territory.
A great song, with brilliant lyrics, a pretty cool, and certainly catchy chorus, plus excellent instrumental performances from all the band. The solo guitar playing by Marty, is also pretty cool too, adding not only riffs, but little licks, which sort of tickle your ear drums in a way, good way of course! The backing vocals add some nice little touches.
“Where Are You Now?”
The title track, and what, you say, another brilliant intro?, yes, this is gonna be a fabulous listening experience, and so it proved. The electric guitar, sound effects, etc, produces a psychedelic feel, with these absolutely wonderful, spacious sounds swirling around us, the vocals take us by the auditory hand, so to speak, and we’re drawn into another world. The vocal line is certainly hypnotic, and combined with the beautiful instrumental sections, definitely earns/deserves the title – ‘the title track’ – a terrific song!!
Didn’t know what to expect with this song title, mind you, thats often a good thing to expect the unexpected, as here. Nice acoustic intro takes us to another side of this band. With both melodic and harmonic vocals, in equal measure, here, especially when Helena joins Hari, are exquisite. With the excellent, developed instrumental sections, which give the feel of adding eastern music into the mix, the guitar sounding like a sitar in places, this gives the song that, well, I don’t know actually, but whatever it is, you too have gotta hear it – I love it!!
The fourth track, and another fine addition to the album, to which I’m already hooked. Hari’s vocal’s are especially passionate here, with the supporting backing vocals and instruments, add great accompaniments for both your heart and ears. I must admit, it leaves you feeling – aaaaaaahhhhhh, total relaxed, and chilled, whilst the addition of birdsong is just like icing on the musical cake.
“End Of Time”
A strong electric guitar riffs enters, leading us, or should I say, me, into an experience of wonder, of where do they come up with all their ideas – words, then music, or other way around maybe? But whichever way, it certainly works for me, and I’m sure will for you too. I especially like the ‘chanting’ vocals too, and mixed with great playing from everyone, is a perfect and tremendous, final song!!!
So, to sum up. This EP is a great sounding piece of musical work, and I for one, look forward to hearing more songs by them. So, a massive thanks to WOSKI for sharing with us their music.
