Throughout 2016, James White has been visiting the refugee camp in Calais to provide whatever help he can. Whether that’s building shelters, teaching English, providing much needed donations or simply trying to “bring a bit of normality” to a place given a name that has no basis in reality except to dehumanise its residents.
In August, he returned to Calais for the last time, taking supplies, a guitar and a camera to record footage of the trip prior to the demolition of the camp in October.
Giving the film a uniquely fitting soundtrack with his cover of Nirvana’s “Where Did You Sleep Last Night?” the video is as thought-provoking as it is heart-wrenching.
In an interview with CambridgeTV, James talks about his motivation for going and some of the projects that were underway, including more amazing music from the refugees themselves.
The videos below are from The Calais Sessions. Their humanity speaks for itself.
If you want to do your bit to help refugees in crisis, James recommends donating to War Child.
