I love my job, and one of the reasons why is the fact that people from all over the world get in touch. Independent artists, with the drive and passion to reach out to publications across the planet, in the faint hope of getting their music heard!
It’s a truly wonderful thing, because otherwise we may never discover them.
The least we can do, as journalists, is listen ...
Que Soul Storm, from Vicenza, Italy, who dropped a gem of an album into my download folder this week. It’s their debut album, it’s called “EVICTION”, and it’s out now.
I will always give credit where it’s due, and I will give it to them for trying to be different, and creating something which is ... really rather good!
Whilst it embodies ones expectations of a prog record, with it’s archetypal keyboards, and semi-theatrical vocals, it is actually really fresh sounding.
There’s some solid guitar work, strong melodies, with a few dark riffs – which give it an edge, and gave me goosebumps (always preferable to nosebleeds which is what most new prog music does to me!).
I would say that it bridges progressive rock and melodic rock, and is even borderline AOR in places – which is a great mix to have achieved because potentially it will attract an audience beyond the realms of the prog fan, and maybe even serve as a way into some heavier prog, for those who still think it’s too uncool to dip their earlobes into the genre ...
Give it a spin – I think it’s worth it.
