LEEDS O2 ACADEMY 15/11/16
Slaves packed out Leeds’ O2 Academy on Tuesday night. Both the crowd and the set were steaming in equal measure, and surely no-one was disappointed. Not even those who lost their shoes in the pit (at least 2 people hopped home in the damp aftermath).
In a set that included past favourites and new sounds, the Tunbridge Wells duo hit hard and loud and the Yorkshire crowd, intent on chanting their home location, were quick to respond. From asking How’s Amelia through to The Hunter, Slaves pleased the crowd with anecdotes and anarchy, ensuring we all know why there’s no hi-hat (fuck that) and ensuring the capacity numbers were fully on board for a White Knuckle Ride. And oh, what a ride.
Still raw and ready, Laurie and Isaac show no signs of slowing down or pandering to the establishment. Take Control was superb in its pertinent splendour and their references to Trump and the idiocy of current political play gave a timely thrust to the Slaves manifesto. While they may have to have calls to Cheer Up London, one thing for sure is that Leeds was delighted.
Slaves are in great form – defiant and deafening. You’d be mad to miss them.
