I was just sitting here, wondering what to buy for the music lovers in my life this Christmas, and decided to browse the festive chart.
Am I allowed to swear? Because if not I’m going to find it hard to put my thoughts onto paper.
*Disclaimer : this is my own personal view, and not that of Sounds staff in general – although if any of them disagree, I think their positions should be questioned.
For starters – who the hell is Blake Shelton? And who is Nick Knowles? Is he that uber-groomed DIY guy? Can he sing? It got to #92!
I am losing faith in the music consuming population.
Alexander Armstrong ... Pointless.
Who are 98 Degrees? Sia? Fantasia? Anyone?
Lindsey Stirling looks different ; Pentatonix – only because it sounds like Gin and Tonic, did I look twice.
Mmmmmmmm Elvis – worth considering perhaps, and maybe Josh Groban for my Mum.
Wow! Cheap Trick?! I am going to pretend they haven’t done that.
Aaaaaaah Sinatra’s Ultimate Christmas, how extraordinarily DONE BEFORE!
Oh will you look at this! Hanson have returned to the fore, 20 years on from their debut, with an album of little festive ditties!
The choices are endless, but my boredom threshold isn’t.
Let’s hear it for Gwen Stefani, Smokey Robinson, Aled Jones, and Herb Alpert – “Nothing’s better than jazz renditions of classic Christmas songs by the fireplace” – I beg to differ, but I’m clearly The Grinch.
Where’s Sir Cliff Richard? He must be in here somewhere. I can’t find Buble either – has the world ended?
Is it just me who is highly unlikely to buy any of these? How many times can you re-hash the same old tunes and invoke the spirit of Christmas, without driving yourself to drinking it?
I have actually found an alternative – if you’re open to the fact that there is a star on the front cover (which is also Gold) and as far as I am concerned, qualifies it as a festive option.
It has all the elements of a true Christmas classic, and better still it’s original!
There’s jingling, jangling, Prof. Brian Cox, a certain degree of crooning – plus it can be enjoyed by the fireplace, or whilst out riding your sleigh ...
“Star Smile Strong”, is the rather fabulous new album by Ian McNabb.
Guaranteed to bring joy to the person who’s stocking you put it in.
