As a member of The Moody Blues since 1966, John Lodge has spent much of his life touring the World, as part of a ‘rock n roll band’ ; but it wasn’t until September 2016, that he embarked on his first ever solo tour of the UK.
His first solo album, released in 1977, was never played live, and when I asked John what had taken him so long to get his own show on the road, he was quick to point out, with a smile, that he has been busy with his “other band” ...
I felt very privileged to be a part of the team that helped to get John out on the road last year – there was an overwhelming sense of pride and enjoyment from the fans who were fortunate enough to see the shows.
Despite finding himself as the centre of attention for the first time, and in more intimate settings than he’s been used to for a great number of years, John proved that he was more than content to perform in this capacity – yet, on occasion, you couldn’t help but notice a boyish naivety that would normally only be seen in a musician who was just starting out.
He told me “It really does feel great to be up there playing my songs, and having the opportunity to give fans something different – it makes it all the more enjoyable when you’re surrounded by such wonderful people, as the 10,000 Light Years band. I’ve always wanted to do this, and it’s been a long time coming … but it’s been completely worth the wait ...”
To begin to convey that to people who didn’t see the show is difficult, but fortunately for all of us there is some exciting news!
On September 30th 2016, on the evening of John’s first ever solo gig in his home town of Birmingham, we invited a film crew along – what was recorded is ... I think ... pretty special.
Scheduled for an October 2017 release, JOHN LODGE: LIVE FROM BIRMINGHAM – THE 10,000 LIGHT YEARS TOUR, is a special edition box set – containing a DVD of the full concert, the live soundtrack on CD, and in addition a special “behind the scenes” bonus DVD covering John’s journey from his New York City release party, through to the final concert of the 2016 Tour, in Birmingham.
